RUN Newsletter
In this newsletter: Meet our team, upcoming events at Harvard
Meet Birungi, a RUN Uganda staff member
We interviewed Birungi (who goes by Betty) to get her perspective on how things work at our children's home. She gave us insight into her past jobs, daily schedule, and goals.
Betty's typical day begins and ends with her caring for the kids. First, she wakes them up and gets them ready in time for school. During the day, it is her job to oversee other staff members' work. When the children return home from school,
she makes sure that they are all healthy, that everyone has bathed, and that they have eaten. Finally, she ensures that all the children have time to play some games, like netball, and that they have completed their homework before going to sleep.
Betty has always been passionate about educating and caring for kids. She previously worked at another orphanage and school prior to joining our team at RUN.
To summarize Betty's dedication in her own words, “When they are ok, I feel fine also in my life."
Meet HRUN
A team of dedicated Harvard students makes up one of our several staffs here at RUN. This week, we interviewed HRUN's Development Director, Angela Rangira.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Angela Rangira and I am an international student from Rwanda. I am currently a junior at Harvard college concentrating in Economics with a secondary field in African Studies.
I am passionate about international development, particularly, in the Sub-saharan African context. I am especially interested in intersection of private institutions and development- how we can leverage private interest to maximize public good through building coherent incentive structures that encourage more investment in the provision of public services.
What do you do with HRUN? I joined Raise Uganda Now in the second semester of sophomore year as a sustainability development officer. My work focuses on designing and implementing long-term models that generate revenue to sustain the orphanage without depending on donor inputs entirely.
Additionally, work on creating programs that add value to the life and education of our children outside their traditional school time. Currently, I am also working developing content for the organization and alumni/faculty outreach to raise funds for the Angela Mathew Center.
What has been the most fulfilling part about working with RUN? I think the most fulfilling part during my time with RUN is creating work that I know will have a direct impact on peoples lives.
I have enjoyed learning about the kids as more than their life struggles, and seeing the world from their perspectives through their drawings, writing and pictures.
